Anxiety Q & A

What is anxiety?

Anxiety disorders are a group of mental health conditions that cause constant worry, and in some cases, panic attacks, that lead to a sense of lack of control.

While there are biological factors that contribute to anxiety, your symptoms may be triggered or exacerbated by trying to control something that you have no control over.

There are several types of anxiety disorder, including:

  • Generalized anxiety disorder
  • Panic disorder
  • Social anxiety disorder
  • Separation anxiety disorder
  • Phobias

Your risk of developing an anxiety disorder is influenced by your genetics and environment. For example, if you have a personal or family history of anxiety or mental health issues, you’re more likely to develop the condition.

In addition, living through stressful or harmful events or situations during childhood can increase your risk of an anxiety disorder.

Furthermore, incorrect thoughts about self, life, and God often contribute to anxiety and worry. Most people become anxious when they are overly fixated on temporary things and trying to control things that they have no control over.

*Psychiatric diagnosis (DSM V, ICD-10) provides a helpful description of various conditions. It is useful for communication. However, a psychiatric diagnosis does not explain the causes of the condition and treatment should not be driven by the diagnosis alone

When should I talk to a psychiatrist about anxiety?

Anxiety disorders cause a variety of distressing and disruptive symptoms, such as:

  • Persistent intrusive negative thoughts
  • Feeling nervous, tense, or restless
  • Having a sense of impending doom
  • Reduced concentration
  • Avoidance behavior
  • Insomnia
  • Rapid heartbeat and respiration
  • Sweating
  • Trembling
  • Increased purposeless activity, like hand wringing
  • Gastrointestinal problems

You should schedule a consultation with Dr. Hsieh if you live with any of these symptoms and they interfere with your health or quality of life. For example, if your anxiety gets in the way of your relationships or performance at work or school, he can help you.

How is anxiety treated?

Dr. Hsieh begins with a comprehensive evaluation of your mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical health. He asks questions about your symptoms and how they impact your life. You also review your medical history together and talk about your lifestyle.

After your initial assessment, Dr. Hsieh creates your personalized treatment plan. Your program may include a combination of medication, counseling, and lifestyle changes to target both your baseline anxiety and periodic spikes of anxiety.

As a faithful Christian, Dr. Hsieh offers biblical counseling services to help you with anxiety. The Bible, which is the Word of God, offers guidance and a framework for coping with anxiety and allowing God to carry your burdens (1 Peter 5:7), as well as for instructions on how to think and live in God’s world.
